Black & Decker Workmate 400 Repair
The Black & Decker Workmate 400, which I've had for many years, includes
four fold-down legs for increasing the table height as desired. Each of
the four legs is kept in either the extended or the collapsed position
by a simple plastic part called a leg catch (Tool Parts Direct part number
148788). One of those parts broke on mine and neither ABS nor Superglue
would fix it. Finding the part at Tool Parts Direct I ordered four- that will
guarantee no others will break!
Each leg is held on with a single steel dowell which is a friction fit
in a hole in the leg catch. I pulled the dowell out easily with a pliers
and then removed the remains of the old leg catch. The new part snapped
in place easily enough but the steel dowell did not want to push through
more than half way. The obstruction was a ridge from the moulding
(casting) of the leg catch, and a few passes of a small rat-tail file
solved that (don't file too much as the friction fit keeps everything in
place!)
My Workmate 400 is now good for many more years. Thanks.
